★★★★★ "I started this book because I enjoy stories about strong faith and love. This one felt very different and deep. The world in this book is scary, with people controlled by a powerful AI. But I liked how the characters, especially Jacob, tried to find truth and love even when everything felt dark.
As a mom, I really felt for the characters who wanted to protect their families and beliefs. It made me think about what I would do to keep my kids safe and strong in their faith. This book was exciting and touching, and it made me feel thankful for the freedom we have now"
★★★★★"I picked this up on a whim and didn’t expect to be pulled in so fast. The world-building is intense, and the tension builds right from the start. I found myself caring about the characters more than I expected, especially as the lines between loyalty, survival, and rebellion started to blur. The romance doesn’t take over the story, but it adds just enough to make the stakes feel personal. It’s gritty, emotional, and full of those “wait, what just happened?” moments. If you like dystopias that feel uncomfortably close to reality, this one keeps things gripping all the way through."
★★★★★"I just finished this book, and what a powerful, thought-provoking read! Set in a chillingly realistic dystopian future where AI controls humanity, it explores the tension between faith, freedom, and tyranny. I was completely drawn into the underground resistance, the moral struggles of the characters, and the rich, almost dreamlike atmosphere the author created. The shifts in perspective added so much depth, helping me understand both the heroes and the villains on a deeper level. This is not just an action-packed story but a profound reflection on what it means to fight for freedom and truth. Highly recommended!
★★★★★ "I found In the Year of Our Lord 2433 gripping from the start. The concept is original, a future where truth is controlled by a ruthless AI, and faith is not only outlawed but almost forgotten. The world-building is chilling and vivid, with echoes of 1984 and Brave New World, yet with a spiritual depth that sets it apart.
The story is told from multiple points of view, which really added layers to the narrative. My favorite character was Jacob, his journey from loyal MOET commander to something far more conflicted and human was compelling. I found myself rooting for him.
The writing is strong throughout, with moments of real emotional tension. My only personal preference would have been for a bit more hope and light amidst the darkness, but perhaps that’s part of what made the ending feel so impactful.
Robert Wood Anderson is a talented writer. All in all, a well-crafted, thought-provoking novel that explores truth, faith, and rebellion in a world that feels eerily possible. Definitely worth a read.
★★★★★ "This dystopian novel presents a future that is terrifying in how close it is to a currently achievable reality (think “re-education camps” and mass surveillance in China, for example). In 2433, the world is controlled by an artificial intelligence, which is connected to each individual person across the planet. All that remains of human freedom and religion has literally been pushed underground.
This underground is largely a Catholic community, and the religion is espoused without apology. However, the author depicts this community as one of faith, not universal certainty, nor is it made up of perfect automatons. Instead, there is dissent, both faithful and not, and even sin.
The violent story of the meeting between these opposing forces gives the narrative the structure of a typical action-adventure novel. However, the tension does not consist merely in these clashes, but in the struggle for understanding taking place within the key characters in the novel. As readers, we enter the minds of the characters, and witness the choices made in the souls of both tyrants and rebels."
